The Baltimore Art Center was founded by Maryland Institute alumni and Instructor Reuben Kramer in 1944 — making it the only art school to admit African Americans in the 1940s. He and several artists taught night classes to more than 60 black and white students in Baltimore. Kramer’s wife, Perna Krick, quit her teaching job at the Maryland Institute to take an unpaid position at the Baltimore Art Center.
